Data export within the EU Data Act
The Data Act of the European Union allows customers to export their existing data, e.g. in order to switch to another provider.
You can read about the applicable conditions in detail here.
Our standards
As a customer-centric company, IONOS offers you the flexibility to switch providers through a straightforward data export process. While we're sad to see you go, we would be grateful for any feedback on your decision, as it helps us enhance our offerings and better serve our community.
IONOS products are built on open standards and interfaces, making the data export process effortless. The self-service export function within each product gives you maximum flexibility to manage the process on your own terms. Your exported data is available instantly, securely, and is fully verifiable.
Process
Before you migrate, please make sure your new provider supports data import in the correct format. We recommend testing the process first, as IONOS cannot influence procedures or compatibility within another provider's environment. Our team is available to offer general advice if needed.
You can export data from your IONOS products on your own at any time. You'll find detailed, step-by-step instructions further down this page.
If you decide to migrate your data and cancel your services, please make sure to confirm that your service is set to expire on that date. To finalize the details and ensure a smooth subscription expiration, please contact our customer service department.
If you have questions or need extra help, our customer service team is here for you.
VPS servers are fully managed by clients, so you must perform the export directly on the virtual machine (VM). To export data from a virtual machine, follow these steps:
1. Compress and archive the data: Combine all the files you want to export into a single archive.
2. Transfer the file: Use a secure protocol like SCP to move the archived file to another machine.
3. Unpack the data: Extract the archive at the destination.
To transfer email messages or entire mail folders, use the move or copy option. You can find details on this operation in the user manual for your specific email client on the support website. Typically, the solution is as simple as left-clicking a selected folder or message and dragging the items to the destination folder of your new email account. Please note that autoresponders, anti-spam settings, and mailing lists cannot be exported.
The export of your email account list can be performed in the Customer Panel using a dedicated function. You can choose to export all of your email accounts or only selected ones from the list. The export is saved as a .csv file, which you can then use in another customer panel or provide to a server administrator to transfer the mailboxes.
Our website builder service doesn't have an automatic data export tool, you can still easily transfer your content.
To export your data, simply log in to your dashboard and manually copy the following items:
Text content
Images and other graphic files
This allows you to easily move your project to a similar platform or use it as a foundation to create a more advanced website.
A user can export their files using WebFTP (in the customer panel, by downloading a compressed ZIP archive or individual files) or via an FTP/SSH connection (depending on the tariff plan).
Databases (in SQL format) can be downloaded by accessing phpMyAdmin in the customer panel or through an SSH connection. The method for email export has been described in the section above.
If you have any questions, please contact us; we will explain how to go through this process.
User Rights and Licenses
Usage rights (licenses, subscriptions, image rights, etc.) provided as part of IONOS services are non-transferable and cannot be exported. If you plan to migrate your data to another provider, you are responsible for securing the necessary replacements. Please remember to account for all licenses, including those for software and image rights.
